My whole family came to town for Easter weekend. We celebrated and feasted, it is always fun having them around. Half way through Saturday we ran out of oranges and bourbon (we’d been drinking old fashioneds, obvi). We did not run out of gin and I had a stubborn grapefruit still sticking around in the fruit basket, a remnant of winter citrus recipes. Gin and tonics, while a classic, can be very vanilla and we wanted something slightly more interesting. So, Joe peeled off a section of the grapefruit, lit the oils on fire and added some bitters to his gin and tonic and voila to make a new favorite drink: grapefruit gin cocktail.
Bagels and Lox with Roasted Heirloom Tomatoes
Is anyone else’s three year old acting like you a pre-teen lately? Seriously, if I have to tell Marston one more time to pick himself up off the floor and stop crying (no, you cannot drink milk out of a candle with a pencil straw. THAT’S NOT EVEN A THING.) I’m going to lose my ever loving mind. When he does this, I remind myself that Saturday is coming and with Saturday comes my favorite meal: brunch. We’ve been eating a lot of bagels and lox with roasted heirloom tomatoes and I don’t hate it.
Maple Bacon Blueberry Brussels Sprout Hot Cakes
Okay, listen, don’t get all judgey-judgey on me. Don’t hate it till you ate it. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Seriously, not only is it so delicious, you even get some good vitamins, on account of you know, the sprouts. These maple bacon blueberry brussels sprout hot cakes are a game changer for your Saturday morning brunch.
Chocolate Bourbon Caramel Ice Cream
I have been on an ice cream kick lately which is great for soul, bad for my bottom. I try to make it only when we’re having company so I don’t sit around and eat it all. Problem for my bottom is that we’ve had a lot of company over the past few weeks. OH WELL. There are worse things in the world than eating delicious chocolate bourbon caramel ice cream.

Roasted Leg of Lamb with Mustard, Shallot, Wine and Sunchoke Puree
On Saturday afternoon my family will descend on our small urban cottage. We’ll spend the weekend celebrating new life and enjoying one another. At some point there will be an easter egg hunt and probably a nap. Hip hip hooray for naps!
Fresh Strawberry Pie Recipe from Grandma Ellen Bunting
Strawberry season is in full swing in Florida and California. In Georgia the U-pick strawberry fields open sometime mid-April. Strawberries are a wonderful fruit. Aside from being incredibly healthy, there is so much you can do with them. Salads, gazpacho, dips, salsa, fish, meat, chicken, sauce, ice cream, more ice cream, the possibilities are endless. Today I’m sharing a family recipe—Fresh Strawberry Pie from Grandma Ellen Bunting.
11 Dinner Table Manners I’m Trying to Teach My Children
I have four siblings and we’re all 18 months apart. At one point there were three of us in college. One year we all came home for Christmas and my mother threatened to send us back to Cotillion. Apparently surrounded by our besties at a cafeteria table did not lend itself to good table manners. Something about licking our plates being frowned upon? My mother is such a stickler! We’ve marginally improved since, most assuredly our spouses have probably helped. I’ll be honest, I hate writing these things because I chronically break them and then everyone KNOWS. But, I’ve had many requests for more of these types of blogs, so I am sharing them in good faith that you will not judge me when I come to your house for dinner and break them all.
Irish Cream Ice Cream for St. Patrick’s Day
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! How are you celebrating today? One of the things I love about the United States is how we’ll use any excuse to throw a party. The Mexicans beat the French? We’ll drink to that! You got a Saint over in Ireland? Let’s dye our river green! We need more celebrations in this world and I love that the U.S. likes to celebrate. So in honor of that (and also, to be clear, my brother-in-law is AN ACTUAL IRISHMAN. This recipe might as well be certified.) I developed a homemade irish cream ice cream for St. Patty’s day.
White Pepper Goat Cheese and Asparagus Quiche
Today I’m sharing a white pepper goat cheese and asparagus quiche. It’s perfect for breakfast, brunch or brinner. It reminds me of new life, happiness and all things spring. It’s what I’ll be making for Easter brunch (Lamb and Jerusalem artichoke puree for dinner) and also what I ate for dinner last night. And it’s what you should try as soon as you are able. Spring asparagus are hitting the market stand and they are yummy!
