When Marston was 14 months old, we were living in California. I didn’t try many adventurous foods with him because he’s a kid and adventurous foods aren’t kid-friendly, right? He was definitely going to be a picky eater. I thought if I got him to eat an apple and some blueberries I was doing good.
Nine Stocking Stuffer Ideas for Cooks
Fifteen days till Christmas ya’ll. Have you put together stockings yet for your friends/family/whoever you’re putting stockings together for this year? I still have a few things to get for my little family, so I thought it might be helpful to put together a list of stocking stuffer ideas for those of you still on the hunt!
Husk Restaurant of Nashville (and Charleston)
Joe and I were in Nashville last week for work. Awhile ago my friend Jessica (the chef at KR Steakbar) suggested we try out Sean Brock’s Husk restaurant the next time we were in Nashville. So before driving up last week I made a reservation. Thursday night we left the boys with a friend and jumped over to the old (small) plantation(ish) style home for a late dinner.
Orange Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bark Recipe
Have you seen those orange chocolate ball things at the store during the holidays? They are my favorite holiday candy and every year as they appear on the shelves I dream about eating them. And then I have a nightmare about my pants no longer fitting which keeps them on the shelves and not in my grocery cart.
I have the same experience with dark chocolate hazelnut Ritter bars. So when I started dreaming of holiday goodies, a mash up of these two into an orange dark chocolate hazelnut bark seemed like a good idea. And it was a good idea, but not for my pants. Although who are we kidding, my pants didn’t fit after Halloween.
Spiced Chocolate Shortbread Cookies
I’m always on the lookout for chocolatey christmas cookies. I made these spiced chocolate shortbread cookies a few weeks ago and loved them. I hope you do too. Especially if you’re like me and thought that Christmas cookies were sorely lacking in the chocolate arena.
Black Friday & Cyber Monday Deals for Cooks (and Those Who Love Them)
I love Glennon Melton’s family rule of all Christmas shopping being completed by December 1 allowing them to truly enjoy the holiday festivies. Even if they go to the mall they can enjoy the experience rather than a frazzled stressed errand.
The tricky part of that, is that you miss some of the wonderful deals (and savings!) in all the stores. Fortunately with the onset of the internet so much more productive shopping can be done from your couch. In your underwear. And the experiential enjoyable aspect of shopping can be had at a leisurely pace throughout the year.
I’ve compiled a list of both gift ideas and deals for the cook in your life. (I’ll be updating this list over the weekend, so check back as new deals get added and old deals get removed.)
Chipotle Cranberry Sauce with Raspberries and Saison
Have you decided what you’ll be serving for your appetizers yet for Thanksgiving? I have felt uninspired all month until last week when I was drinking a saison while cooking dinner. This is what happens when you drink you beer. It inspires you. (It also works for bourbon and wine.) I present to you chipotle cranberry sauce with raspberries and saison over cream cheese, voilà!
Turkey Leftovers: Turkey, Brie and Cranberry Sandwich
I had planned on posting this later in the week and instead sharing an appetizer recipe today. But then I worried you were getting your last minute shopping in today and tomorrow and I wanted you to have all the information for the most important meal on Friday: turkey leftovers (which is breakfast if you’re a Barnes. You wait till lunch it’s all gone).
November Stitch Fix Review
How’s your holiday shopping coming along? This year I decided I would try and get all of my shopping done before Thanksgiving. I’m about half way there, so either this next week will be incredibly busy or I’ll just fail. Probably I’ll fail.
I’ll be honest, since having children I have one pace: slow. It doesn’t matter what I do, I can never go faster than slow, which leaves little room for shopping. This is why I am so fond of Stitch Fix. If you’re looking for a gift for a busy woman in your life, this is it. Give her a gift card to update her wardrobe right from her living room (it’s also so much fun!).
Bourbon Tollhouse Pie
When I was in college around Thanksgiving and Christmas our cafeteria would serve tollhouse pie. Apparently the cafeteria frowns on “whole pies to go” so my besties and I would hide them under our jackets and sneak them out. How the heck we hid an entire pie (with whip cream) under our jackets is beyond me. And why in the world I felt the need to take an entire pie instead of just a slice is also beyond me. Here’s hoping the statue of limitations for pie stealing is under ten years.
