Are you one of those people that like birthday cake? The cake is among the most revered pastries in America. Some people even made up a birthday cake milk shake (which I find disgusting). I think cake tastes like an airy sponge. And why you want airy sponge for dessert is beyond me. But no one seems to listen to me and everyone still wants cake at their birthday, so I worked on this red wine chocolate cake recipe that is dense and moist with depth of flavor.
When You’re Pregnant You Need Red Wine Chocolate Cake
I don’t like to bake very often. Mostly cause I like to fit into my pants. But sometimes (always) when I’m pregnant and NEED something yummy (those maternity pants can be awfully stretchy), I make this cake. Marston really liked it a lot when he was in my belly. I adapted it Food and Wine.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon of strong lukewarm coffee
- 1¼ teaspoons baking soda
- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 1¾ cups sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1¼ cups dry red wine
- 12 ounces of bittersweet chocolate chips
- 5 chocolate covered strawberries (optional)
- Grease and flour a bundt pan. Flouring means dust the pan with flour after you've greased it. This keeps the cake from sticking when your done. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl mix together flour, cocoa powder, coffee and baking soda.
- In a large bowl, using a mixer, beat the butter and sugar together until pale yellow and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing in between. Add in vanilla and beat for 1½-2 minutes longer.
- Fold in dry ingredients a little bit at a time. Stir in wine until just blended. Finally, add in chocolate chips.
- Pour batter into bundt pan and bake for 40-45 minutes (a toothpick should come out clean and the cake should be pulling away from the sides). Let cool in the pan on the rack for 10 minutes before removing from pan and cooling entirely on rack.
- Dust with confectioner's sugar and garnish with chocolate covered strawberries.
And once you’re done trying it out, it’s really only fair if you bring me a piece, on account of it’s the right thing to do.
Have you tried the recipe? Did you like it? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Comment and rate it below!

Haha I love this! You are such a funny writer! Have you tried adding sour cream for extra moistness?! I must have this.
Talia Bunting says
I have added sour cream to other things, but not this one because I didn’t want it to compete with the red wine. But maybe I should try it anyway!
